history
A short history
Jamsetji Tata passed away in 1904; the settlement and steel company at Sakchi were founded in 1907 by his son, Sir Dorabji Tata, following Jamsetji's vision, chosen for its proximity to iron ore deposits and water sources. Renamed Jamshedpur in 1919 by Viceroy Lord Chelmsford, the settlement developed into India's premier planned industrial city. Tata Steel manages much of the civic infrastructure today through its utility arm.
