Marloth Park

Marloth Park is a holiday township where wild animals roam between residential houses without perimeter fences. You share dirt roads with giraffes, zebras, and warthogs while dangerous predators remain across the Crocodile River in Kruger National Park. Navigating the settlement does not require a high-clearance vehicle, as standard sedans can manage the dirt roads if driven slowly, though alertness is still needed at dawn and dusk. Nightfall brings strict noise limits and pitch-black roads to protect wildlife.

Self-catering is the dominant dining style in Marloth Park, centred around the evening braai on your private terrace. Local butcheries sell fresh game meats including kudu boerewors and impala steaks alongside classic beef cuts. A handful of casual bush pubs and riverfront restaurants serve simple meals for nights when you skip cooking.

  Buy spiced beef boerewors and dense hardwood at the Marlothi butcher. Softwoods burn down too quickly to leave hot coals.

  Never feed animals human food or kitchen scraps. Feeding baboons or monkeys creates dangerous habits and triggers steep municipal fines.

Marloth Park developed as a low-impact residential holiday township adjoining Kruger National Park. Urban planners deliberately eliminated boundary fences to create a shared sanctuary for non-dangerous game species.

1. 1972

   Developer Johan Oelofse purchases farmland and lays out Marloth Park as a conservation-focused holiday township.

   A 1,500-hectare internal reserve is fenced off to enclose larger species including buffalo and lion separately from houses.

   Property owners enforce strict rules banning domestic pets and garden boundary walls to preserve wildlife corridors.

Choose by river proximity and power backup. Properties along Crocodile Drive provide direct views of Kruger National Park across the river bed but charge higher nightly rates. Interior bushveld properties offer deeper quiet among free-roaming wildlife at lower cost. Select houses with solar systems or generators to handle power outages.

Marloth Park has no public transport or rideshare services. Having a rental car is mandatory for groceries, dining, and daily trips into Kruger National Park. Internal roads consist mostly of unpaved dirt tracks. High-clearance vehicles offer a smoother ride, though standard cars manage dry gravel roads at slow speeds.

• Drive under 50 km/h on paved roads and 30 km/h on dirt tracks. Fines are levied to protect animals crossing roads.

• Roads have no streetlights. Animals sleep on warm gravel roads after dark, making night driving hazardous.

• Crocodile Bridge Gate sits 14 km east. Drive time takes 20 minutes via the paved road outside the park.

• Pedestrian movement inside Marloth Park is banned after dark to protect residents from stray predators.

Marloth Park offers cheaper self-catering lodging than rest camps inside Kruger National Park. Grocery stores inside the park carry higher prices than full-sized supermarkets in Malelane. Card payments work at local retail shops, but cash is helpful for tipping petrol attendants and gate staff.
