A short history
Novi Sad grew opposite the Habsburg military fortress of Petrovaradin in the late 17th century. Empress Maria Theresa granted it free royal city status in 1748. The city suffered heavy damage during the 1849 Hungarian Revolution bombardment but rebuilt rapidly into Serbia's cultural capital.
