Predeal

Predeal sits at 1,030 metres on the mountain pass between Wallachia and Transylvania. The town exists because of the railway line cut through the Prahova Valley in 1879. You come here to ski the Clăbucet slopes in winter or hike toward the Bucegi trails in summer. Traffic on the main road gridlocks on weekends, so smart visitors travel by train.

Predeal eats like a high-altitude transit stop. Restaurants here focus on heavy Romanian mountain fare designed to restore calories after hours on the slopes or trails.The standard meal starts with ciorbă rădăuțeană (sour chicken garlic soup) or ciorbă de burtă. Mains revolve around grilled pork chops, smoked sausage, and bulz—baked polenta stuffed with sheep cheese and topped with a fried egg. Cabana restaurants near Trei Brazi offer game dishes like wild boar stew.Vegetarians have limited options outside of mushroom polenta, bean soups made without bacon, or fried cașcaval cheese. • Slope-side dining rushes

  Restaurants at the foot of Clăbucet fill up between 13:00 and 15:00. Eat before 12:30 to avoid waiting for a table.

• Chalet eating at Trei Brazi

  Cabana Trei Brazi serves traditional game stews and polenta. It gets busy with families on Sunday afternoons.

• Card payments standard

  Most restaurants accept card payments. Keep RON 50 cash for small hot wine kiosks at the slope base.

Predeal grew from an isolated border post into a mountain transit hub. The pass marked the strict frontier between Wallachia and the Austro-Hungarian Empire for only 51 years, while prior to 1867 Transylvania was ruled by the Habsburg Monarchy and Austrian Empire.

1. 1705

   Border Post Founded

   A small monastic chapel and frontier guard station established the first permanent human settlement at the mountain pass.

2. 1879

   Railway Arrival

   Engineers completed the railway through the Prahova Valley. Predeal became the highest point on the rail line connecting Bucharest to Transylvania.

3. 1916

   Battle of Predeal Pass

   Heavy fighting occurred here during World War I as Romanian forces defended the pass against Central Powers troops.

4. 1950s

   Resort Expansion

   The state developed ski lifts and winter sports infrastructure, transforming Predeal into a national winter training hub.

Choose your base based on your primary activity and transport mode. If arriving by train without a car, stay near the station or the Clăbucet slope base to avoid long uphill walks with luggage. If you want quiet evenings and mountain views, pick a guesthouse in the Cioplea district on the upper slopes.

Predeal is small enough to walk on foot, but steep terrain separates districts. The train station and main road sit at the bottom of the valley, while Cioplea and Clăbucet climb up opposing hillsides.

• Both state rail (CFR) and private operators (Softrans, Astra Trans Carpatic) serve Predeal station. Buy tickets online in advance.

• Taxis wait outside the train station. Negotiate or insist on the meter for short rides up to Cioplea or Clăbucet.

• The walk from the railway station to the Clăbucet ski slope base takes 15 minutes on foot along Strada Telecabină.

• If driving to Trei Brazi or Cioplea in winter, winter tyres are mandatory by law, and snow chains are often required.

Predeal is more affordable than neighbouring Poiana Brașov, but prices rise sharply during peak winter weekends. Booking ski equipment and rooms three weeks early keeps costs reasonable.

  Includes boots, skis, and poles from rental shops along Strada Telecabină.

  One-way regional or InterRegio train fare for the 30-minute ride north.

• Bear safety on trails

  Brown bears inhabit the surrounding forests. Carry bear spray, make noise while walking, and avoid hiking alone at dusk.

• Rapid weather shifts

  Mountain temperatures drop fast after sunset. Always carry a waterproof shell and warm layers even on sunny summer days.

• Sunday evening DN1 jams

  Avoid driving back toward Bucharest between 14:00 and 21:00 on Sunday. Traffic moves at walking speed.

• ATMs in town

  ATMs are located along Bulevardul Mihail Săulescu in Centru. Few exist up near Trei Brazi.
