Thailand

Rayong

Coastal seafood, artisanal fish sauce, and Gulf island gates.

introduction

Overview

Rayong sits on the eastern Gulf Coast of Thailand, three hours southeast of Bangkok. Most travellers pass through on their way to Koh Samet, but the provincial mainland holds its own distinct pace. Dark blue songthaew trucks connect the riverfront old town with long seafood beaches and working ferry piers. You come here for barrel-aged fish sauce, grilled ocean catches, and quiet coastal nature reserves.

Arrival from Bangkok

Minibuses run directly from Eastern Bus Terminal (Ekkamai) to Rayong town in three hours. Private taxis offer a door-to-door option for around 1,800 THB.

Island Transit Strategy

Skip the slow public ferries at Ban Phe by booking a shared speedboat seat. You reach Koh Samet in fifteen minutes for 200 THB.

food

Rayong's anchovy sauce and coastal curries

Rayong food relies on ocean catches and local agriculture rather than commercial sauces. Local cooks take pride in *Nam Pla Rayong*, an anchovy sauce aged in wooden vats along the river. A signature regional dish is *Gaeng Mu Chamuang*, a rich pork belly curry soured with local *Chamuang* (garcinia) leaves. Seafood stalls along Saeng Chan Beach roast squid and sea bass over mangrove charcoal.

history

A short history

Rayong developed as a maritime trading port along the Gulf of Thailand, serving regional junk traders and coastal fishing fleets. King Taksin retreated through Rayong in 1767 to rally troops before liberating Ayutthaya from Burmese forces. The region transformed into an industrial and agricultural stronghold in the late twentieth century, balancing rubber and fruit cultivation with coastal tourism.
