Sendai

Tohoku's green capital of grilled beef tongue and trees.

introduction

Overview

Sendai is the administrative heart of Tohoku, defined by wide avenues lined with zelkova trees and a grid laid out by samurai warlord Date Masamune. You navigate the city using two subway lines, a loop bus, and extensive covered shopping arcades. Expect a relaxed regional capital that trades frantic Tokyo congestion for compact streets and distinct culinary traditions.

Airport transport link

The Sendai Airport Access Line links the airport to Sendai Station in 25 minutes for 660 yen. Trains depart twice per hour.

City of Trees designation

Sendai is officially nicknamed the City of Trees due to Date Masamune's 17th-century mandate to plant trees across urban land.

Loop bus pass

Buy a Loople Sendai day pass for 630 yen. It gives unlimited rides on the tourist loop bus that connects all major sights.

food

Gyutan, zunda, and cold noodles

Sendai food revolves around simple, high-impact regional specialties. Grilled beef tongue (gyutan) dominates local restaurant menus, traditionally served with barley rice, ox tail soup, and green chili pickles. Sweetened edamame paste (zunda) coats rice cakes or blends into milkshakes sold at station kiosks. Chilled Chinese noodles (hiyashi chuka) were invented here as a summer relief dish.

history

A short history

Date Masamune founded Sendai in 1600 as the seat of the Sendai Domain. He laid out a grid of wide streets and encouraged tree planting along property lines for security and timber. Air raids destroyed most original Edo-period structures in 1945, leading to faithful mid-century reconstructions of the city's key mausoleums and castle foundations.
