Stepantsminda sits at 1,740 metres inside a narrow valley along the Georgian Military Highway. The town functions as a base for day hikes, mountain climbing, and crossing into Russia at the Larsi border. You walk everywhere in town within twenty minutes, though reaching upper villages requires a steep climb or a four-wheel drive. Expect thin air, unpredictable mountain weather, and clear morning views before clouds settle over Mount Kazbek by noon.

Mountain cooking in the Khevi region reflects cold alpine conditions. Kitchens rely heavily on beef, wild caraway, and dense dough rather than the fresh herbs found in lowland Georgia. Local khinkali feature hand-chopped beef seasoned with mountain herbs, rolled in thicker skins to preserve broth at high altitudes.You order khinkali in batches of ten or more. Pair them with khabizgina, a regional mountain flatbread stuffed with potato and local salted cheese, which replaces standard khachapuri across Kazbegi district. Restaurants sit concentrated around the central square and inside high-end hotels on the upper slopes.

Stepantsminda took its name from Saint Stephen, an Orthodox monk who built a hermitage here along the trade trail. The settlement grew because of its position controlling the Dariali Gorge, the primary natural pass through the central Caucasus crest.The Russian Empire converted this trail into a gravel carriage road known as the Georgian Military Road in the 19th century to supply military outposts in Tbilisi. Renamed Kazbegi under Soviet rule after local writer Alexander Kazbegi, the town restored its historical name in 2006 while retaining Kazbegi as the district title.

Stepantsminda itself is small enough to navigate entirely on foot. Moving to surrounding valleys like Truso, Juta, or Dariali requires booking four-wheel drive vehicles or negotiating day hires with drivers parked at the central square.

• The road into Truso Gorge involves rough gravel and deep water ruts. Standard sedans bottom out.

Prices run higher than in Tbilisi due to winter transport costs and tourist demand. Expect higher meal rates in valley taverns compared to non-resort Georgian towns.
