China

Tianjin

Concession architecture and Haihe riverside street life.

introduction

Overview

Tianjin sits thirty minutes southeast of Beijing by high-speed train along the Haihe River. European concession architecture stands alongside Northern Chinese street food stalls. You navigate the city by foot along river banks and through grid-patterned treaty port neighborhoods.

Arriving from Beijing

High-speed C-trains run every 10–15 minutes from Beijing South to Tianjin Station. The journey takes 30 minutes and costs 54.50 RMB.

Concession architecture

The Wudadao area holds over 200 European-style villas built in the 1920s and 1930s during the foreign concession era.

River transport

Haihe river cruises connect key central bridges. Night sailings require advance ticket booking on WeChat during summer weekends.

  • Bring your own eggs

Traditional neighborhood stalls accept customer-provided fresh eggs for your jianbing guozi to reduce the price slightly.

  • Goubuli warning

Goubuli steamed buns are Tianjin's famous brand name, but locals avoid their expensive chain stores in favor of neighborhood baozi shops.

  • Guifaxiang Mahua

history

A short history

Tianjin grew from a river dock town named Zhigu into Northern China's primary maritime gateway. The Treaty of Tientsin was signed in 1858 and ratified by the Convention of Peking in 1860 to open the port to Western trade, and nine foreign concessions were established gradually along the Haihe River between 1860 and 1902. This created a dual city of traditional Chinese quarters alongside European architectural enclaves.

  1. 1404

    City Founding

Emperor Yongle renames the area Tianjin, meaning 'the Emperor's Ford', and fortifies it as a military garrison.

  2. 1900

    Boxer Uprising

Foreign forces siege and destroy Tianjin's ancient city walls, replacing them with broad ring roads.

  3. 1920s

    Wudadao Expansion

Deposed Chinese warlords, politicians, and foreign merchants build hundreds of eclectic villas in the Southern Marsh zone.
