A short history
Tyler was established in 1846 as the county seat for Smith County, named after US President John Tyler. Railroad expansion in the 1870s transformed the town into an agricultural shipping node. After plant disease wiped out local peach orchards in the 1900s, farmers pivoted to rose cultivation. The discovery of the East Texas Oil Field in 1930 funded civic growth and established Tyler as a regional medical and commercial center.
