Wilderness

Coastal lagoon, thick forest, and ocean on the Garden Route.

introduction

Overview

Wilderness is a quiet Garden Route village built around the Touw River estuary and backed by dense indigenous forest. You move through it on foot around the centre, by kayak along the lagoon waters, or by car on the N2 highway. Strong rip currents restrict ocean swimming, so river channels and freshwater lakes provide the main water activity.

George Airport connection

Fly into George Airport (GRJ) for a twenty-minute drive east along the N2 highway.

Garden Route National Park

The Wilderness section of the park protects coastal lakes, estuaries, and indigenous riverine forest.

Canoe and trail permits

Purchase SANParks conservation entry permits at the Ebb-and-Flow Rest Camp office before hiking.
