Wilderness

Wilderness is a quiet Garden Route village built around the Touw River estuary and backed by dense indigenous forest. You move through it on foot around the centre, by kayak along the lagoon waters, or by car on the N2 highway. Strong rip currents restrict ocean swimming, so river channels and freshwater lakes provide the main water activity.

Dining in Wilderness centres on informal village square restaurants and casual seafood spots near the coast. Menus emphasize grilled hake, calamari, wood-fired pizzas, and South African beef cuts. Dinner service fills up early between 18:30 and 20:00, especially during peak December and January holidays.

Wilderness developed from an isolated farm layout into a quiet coastal resort village in the early twentieth century. The construction of the Outeniqua Choo Tjoe railway bridge across the Kaaimans River linked the settlement to George and Knysna, driving modern eco-tourism growth.

   Wilderness National Park was incorporated into the larger SANParks Garden Route National Park structure.

Choose your stay based on transit needs. Staying in Wilderness Village allows you to walk to restaurants and the lagoon. Staying in Wilderness Heights provides expansive views but requires a car for every outing.

Public transit does not run internal routes within Wilderness. Renting a car at George Airport is the standard way to reach trails, viewpoints, and neighboring towns along the N2 highway.

• Fill up in George or Wilderness Village as fuel stops are sparse along trail roads.

• The historical Outeniqua Choo Tjoe train is out of service; tracks are non-operational.
