Wisconsin Dells

Waterparks, sandstone bluffs, and classic supper clubs.

introduction

Overview

Wisconsin Dells splits cleanly into two distinct worlds. The Parkway corridor packs indoor and outdoor waterparks, go-kart tracks, and neon signage along Route 12. Downtown retains red-brick storefronts, boat docks, and traditional fudge shops above the Wisconsin River. A car is essential to move between the resorts, state parks, and river landings.

Arriving by train

Amtrak stops directly in downtown Wisconsin Dells on the Empire Builder route. You can walk straight to river tours and historic hotels.

Historic photo legacy

H.H. Bennett invented the stop-action camera shutter here in 1878 to capture leap shots on the sandstone bluffs.

Supper clubs, fried curds, and riverfront dining

Dining in Wisconsin Dells centers on two local traditions: classic supper clubs and freshwater fish fries. Supper clubs sit outside town along lakeshores, serving prime rib, fried walleye, and ice cream cocktails. Expect long waits on Friday nights when locals turn out for fish fry.

  • The Supper Club Routine

Arrive early, order a brandy Old Fashioned at the bar, and wait for your table call. Relish trays arrive automatically.

  • Friday Night Fish Fry

Most traditional restaurants serve beer-battered cod or walleye on Fridays. Seatings start around 4:30 PM.

  • Ishnala Reservations

Ishnala Supper Club does not take reservations. Arrive before 4:00 PM on weekends to secure a seat without a long wait.

history

A short history

The deep sandstone gorges were carved rapidly over a period of days to weeks during a catastrophic glacial outburst flood when Glacial Lake Wisconsin's ice dam broke around 15,000 years ago. Native Ho-Chunk people lived along these banks long before European settlement. Landscape photographer H.H. Bennett captured the river formations in the 1870s, distributing images that launched the region's tourism industry.
