Located in Osarizawakōzan, 森吉山温泉小さな森の湯 offers family rooms with tatami floors, private bathrooms, and amenities like tea and coffee makers, hairdryers, yukatas, and free toiletries. The ryokan features a hot spring bath, open-air bath, and lounge, as well as free WiFi, a public bath, and mountain views. A breakfast with local specialties is served daily, and the on-site restaurant offers Asian dishes with mountain views, 40 km from Odate-Noshiro Airport.

A stunning bike ride to get there. The owner, who personally runs this secluded spot, is incredibly gracious and prepares tasty dinners and breakfasts. It feels like staying in an old‑world family countryside home. The rustic indoor onsen and peaceful open‑air rotenburo are in the middle of nowhere. The authentic decor gives a sense of bear country culture. It’s a special place, and I sincerely hope to return.

We found everything we came for at this lodge: the calm, the isolation in northern Japan’s nature, the authenticity of a place mainly visited by wilderness lovers and onsens, of course. The owner and the staff were extremely kind and attentive to our needs. We thank them from the bottom of our hearts. It isn’t a negative point, but it’s important to remember that such a place, even when isolated, is inevitably surrounded by nature and insects (beautiful, by the way!). You should know that if you have trouble co‑existing with them. Also, there is no air conditioning, but we didn’t need it even in summer because temperatures stayed very reasonable.

The lodge is a stunning retreat far from everything, visited by fascinating people (we met a team of entomology researchers who guided us to watch fireflies). We decided to stay longer because we felt so comfortable there. The staff who welcomed us were extremely attentive, and the indoor and outdoor onsens were delightful moments of discovery and relaxation! We sincerely thank all the staff. The hotel is very isolated and nature‑respecting, and the toilets are not connected to the main sewer system. They therefore lack the comfort one might be used to. That is perfectly normal and did not bother us. But be warned if that matters to you.
