“For a good night's sleep, try somewhere quieter - And don't be fooled by the hamper!”
We stayed one night in this traditional, old‑fashioned hotel and found the bathroom surprisingly spacious with an efficient shower, very clean, and a nice wide bed. We were lucky to get a free private parking spot. Breakfast would have cost us an extra £35, so we ate at a nearby café instead. The staff felt too formal and not naturally cheerful. On arrival, despite having paid for the room, I was asked to authorize a £100 credit‑card hold for any extras, which I had never seen before and didn’t understand; it felt like a lack of trust and worried me about unauthorized charges. We were also concerned about not having a free parking spot because the hotel didn’t have enough; we would have had to use a nearby public car park, which is free overnight but requires payment from 8 am. The duvet was too hot, so we didn’t sleep well. Our bedroom faced the main street, which used to be quiet but is now too noisy with traffic. Shortly after 5 am on Monday, a refuse lorry woke us up by emptying large amounts of glass bottles at several nearby spots. In the room, a large open hamper held various wines and snacks; it looked welcoming until we found a price list tucked inside, taking up space we could have used, and it couldn’t be closed because of the upright bottles. This was a tasteless touch, the opposite of hospitality.
