“Nice building but a terrible experience”
The onsen was good and the building’s exterior and interior were nice. However, this was the worst stay of my 8 weeks in Japan. When we arrived, the host seemed unfriendly. Standard rooms are smoking rooms, but this was not clearly stated before booking. The diesel generator used to heat the onsen sent exhaust fumes into our upstairs room, producing a strong, unpleasant smell that worried my mother with asthma. We paid about 18,000 yen, so we expected a clean, comfortable room without a bad odor. We asked to change rooms. Initially, the elderly male receptionist said the hotel was fully booked, but after further discussion he found another room and moved us there. During this process, the receptionist was rude, unhelpful, and verbally aggressive, especially toward my mother, raising his voice, stomping, slamming objects, and acting as if we were at fault. My mother felt unsafe sleeping there because of his behavior. The new room was also much smaller than the one we originally paid for. Due to the poor treatment and the serious issue with the original room, we requested a partial refund or price reduction. He then accused us of “blackmail” when we said we would leave an honest review. The building itself is nice, but the customer service was extremely poor. After reading other reviews, I wonder if we were treated differently because we were foreigners. I have included photos of the initial room, two of the smaller room, and the survey form I left for feedback. I strongly recommend that travelers choose a different hotel, as there are many cheaper and friendlier places nearby.
