“Essential halfway overnight stop at Nakahechi Kumano Kodo by the river village”
I stayed at this newly updated inn in a quiet village beside a clear river, and it was fantastic. The rooms were spotless and incredibly comfy, and the owner was so friendly that he even dropped us off at the local market. The homemade breakfasts and packed lunches were tasty, and the village, tucked deep in the woods, offered local restaurants and food that blew us away for such a remote mountain spot. Plus, the inn sits right across from a main bus stop to Kumano Hongu Taisha and is in the middle of the trail from Kii-Tanabe, making it the perfect spot to rest before continuing a hike.
“Spacious and clean”
The location is superb, right across from a coffee shop and a bus stop for the Kumano Kodo journey. A liquor shop is nearby, and a supermarket plus bakery is a 10‑minute walk away to grab dinner, breakfast, and lunch for the next day. The place is easy to find and very clean. We stayed in the Family room, which actually had three separate sleep areas, so it was great for privacy and felt spacious enough. The showers and toilets were very clean, and the whole place felt freshly renovated. The futon beds were extra comfortable. The only downside was mosquitoes in the room, but the host provided an anti‑mosquito device, which we plugged in and had no issues after. Also, the minshuku is closed/unmanned before 3 pm, so don’t rush to arrive earlier.
Mr. Ike, the host, communicated smoothly in Mandarin and English. He personally prepared a sumptuous Japanese dinner and interacted pleasantly with the guests. On September 13th, we stayed one night and that evening there were nine guests: six Taiwanese, three Europeans (a couple from Italy and a Czech woman). Everyone sat at a long table for dinner. The host was very friendly and chatted with everyone, creating a pleasant atmosphere. He also offered plum wine, Japanese sake, and sweet potato wine for everyone to taste.
