We travelled with our American relatives as two families (four kids aged 10 to 16) on a city tour of Europe, choosing Ghent because it’s one of my favorite cities and seemed calmer than Paris, hoping the boat would give us space and peace. We relied solely on public transport and were shocked to read about bed‑bugs when the deposit was being transferred, so I contacted the landlady. She replied immediately and even sent me the invoice from the pest‑control company after I asked. With a weird feeling we decided to go ahead – thank goodness, because the boat turned out exactly as we’d hoped: it was wonderful to be on a boat, very spacious for eight of us, cosy, with enough private corners, and perfectly located (no car needed, supermarkets nearby, the city centre about a 20‑minute walk, the train station also about 20 minutes on foot). What mattered most was the people: the landlady online and Anouchka on site were both friendly, always reachable and helpful. I also appreciated that there were plenty of spices, dishwasher tablets and toilet paper on hand – things you usually have to buy in bulk – which is rare. The boat has no air‑conditioning, but there are enough fans and good ventilation, so it was fine despite the heat. Half of the boat houses a small bar with a separate entrance, which didn’t disturb us; its limited hours (roughly afternoon to 10 pm) were actually a plus for an evening aperitif and cheese plate. We had a fantastic time, felt truly refreshed afterwards, and would gladly return. Thanks again!
