“A lovely retreat with character.”
Still a solid spot to wander around. New tenants are still getting their bearings, but it’s bound to improve once they settle in. The menu had a few shortages and some courses were mixed up timing-wise.
“Excellent place, I will be back”
The place has recently changed ownership and received a major makeover, a big step up from my earlier visits. It’s conveniently located near relatives and my onward route, plus the valley setting is great for dog walks. New staff are friendly and the whole place has been refreshed with new beds and furniture. Unfortunately, breakfast started a bit late, so we had to skip it to keep our travel plans on track.
“Comfortable country inn stay in the Pennines”
The inn is under new ownership, freshly refurbished, and spotlessly clean. We really enjoyed our stay at this lovely place. Our room was very comfortable, the shower pressure was good, and the room had coffee bags instead of instant coffee. Dinner was delicious with huge portions—fish and chips for me, steak and ale pie for my husband. The full English breakfast was tasty, and the beer garden was lovely.
“Absolutely brilliant hosts and a fantastic place to stay. Thank you all for being so welcoming.”
A stunning country pub with parking, tucked away but set beside the river and an old stone bridge, offering a tranquil vibe while still being a quick drive to the main towns. The Elks Head Inn just reopened, and the hosts were incredibly welcoming and went above and beyond for us—absolutely brilliant. The food was fantastic, the drinks selection great, and the quiz night was a blast. Locals and the community have embraced the new owners, so the pub was lively and everyone friendly. We had a great time and will definitely return soon. Rooms are in the middle of a renovation; ours was clean but a little outdated, which the hosts mentioned—they’ve only been here seven weeks. The beds were super comfortable, with high‑quality sheets and duvet covers.
The quiet spot of the property is a plus. However, the short staff team caused delays and restrictions on meal times, forcing us to ask repeatedly for tea, coffee, and teaspoons. Finding staff took a long time, and the bar had long waits for service. The lack of staff was the main issue, and we didn’t even have a private bathroom in our room.
