The hotel was just three minutes from my office, and Daz, who let me in and showed me to my room, was a genuinely nice guy. However, when I arrived I was confronted by a door with a keycode lock, yet I had received no instructions on how to enter. I rang the camera doorbell but got no reply, then tried the phone numbers posted on a notice in the window—one number wasn't recognized and the other went straight to voicemail. After another ring, someone answered and told me he’d be there in two minutes, which he kept. Inside, the room smelled of stale smoke, strong enough to feel on the back of my throat. The two shared bathrooms each had a toilet: one lacked a seat, and the other was so filthy—including the seat—that I wouldn’t risk using it. I didn’t use the kitchen. I’ve stayed in budget places before and know what to expect, but this place didn’t even meet the basic cleanliness standards for budget accommodation.
