The old tuberculosis sanatorium has been turned into a pleasant hostel with simple rooms that still retain a lot of character. The kitchen is really well stocked, and the whole place is tucked away in the woods, so it’s completely quiet.

I stayed in a private room within a group gîte, so I got the best of both worlds – my own space plus shared kitchen, dining tables, lounge and outdoor areas. The bathrooms are communal by design, which felt fine, and the setting up the Rhône valley, a short drive from Vercorin, is downright peaceful. A highlight was stumbling into a garden and meeting a chamois just a few metres away – we stared at each other for a good minute, an unforgettable moment.
