“claustro-intimacy-induced-habit-suppression phobia”
The centre of the centre, many restaurants and a nice spot to walk after hours. Well, there are so many things, but they’re so funny that I’m going to tell you about them anyway. The room was designed for one person, and believe me, it couldn’t possibly have been otherwise. Me and my backpack. To get into the bathroom, for example, I had to make intensive use of soap to render my body sufficiently slippery. A little effort, admittedly, but I managed, and I’m not complaining. The shower could easily have flooded the room. My backpack, carefully placed on the bed, or at least somewhere up high, was ready for the incoming flood. But I found ways to minimise the damage: a towel dam, a simple technique I learned from beavers. From the moment you step inside, the room greets you with an archaic atmosphere. A room that might once have been used to store gardening tools, or perhaps, even worse, to imprison peasants who wouldn’t mind their own business. No window whatsoever. The only opening led into a ventilation shaft. So whether it was raining outside, snowing, the Huns were invading, or anything else was happening, your eyes would be spared any unpleasant sights. Your mind, however — oh, your mind could distort reality in ways you wouldn’t believe. Much like dogs climbing the walls during a thunderstorm. As luck would have it, I arrived right in the middle of the Santa Tecla festival, with all the festivities taking place just outside the ancient walls of this motel. When the fireworks started, I felt compelled to hold on to the walls with both hands and imagine myself aboard some ship that had just launched itself down a mountainside. Entirely possible, really. Noah’s Ark is somewhere on a mountain, after all. Or perhaps my mind was simply playing tricks on me. We’ll never know, since I had no window to check. Getting to the room, however, was an experience from another dimension altogether. I was preparing ropes, pitons, mules — the whole mountaineering kit
