The host was fantastic and the location great; we enjoyed a wonderful night, the meal was amazing, and everything we needed was right at hand

The three‑course dinner was excellent, but the pillow was too thick; some guests prefer a thinner pillow, so having both options would be nice

Breakfast was excellent, the table was well set with a wonderful selection, and the hosts were very helpful

A former British Army helicopter pilot who flew through the Troubles and a New York Times journalist—both of whom later worked for the UN—settled in a Wairarapa valley and opened a lodge that turned out to be special; Craig and Dawn hosted our family of six, fed us exceptionally each night with dishes like beef short rib, BBQ leg of lamb, and a different dessert every evening, and served breakfast at 7 am sharp every morning without any complaint, ready for our tennis tournament; they even welcomed our two Jack Russells without hesitation, which says everything about the place’s spirit; the house itself is a beautiful old manor in a picturesque valley, just a short fifteen‑minute drive from Masterton; the wood‑fired outdoor spa was a godsend for tired tennis players and their parents; our last evening ended with marshmallows around the fire, which felt exactly right; people who have lived in Lebanon, Switzerland, Kenya and New York and chose this as their next chapter bring a certain quality of welcome with them; highly, highly recommend
