“NOT value for money at all”
Libertad’s location and the tours were the best parts – you get to see and do some wonderful things, and our guide Remi was the highlight of the trip. However, the lodging itself was a different story: the facilities fell far short of what even a budget hotel should provide. Cleanliness was a major problem; on the first night we entered a room swarming with cockroaches, and only after we complained were we moved to another room. The wooden cabins are riddled with holes, letting insects in easily. We didn’t expect luxury in the jungle, but basic upkeep would make a huge difference – sealing the gaps with silicone, taking out trash regularly, and supplying clean towels should be standard. In fact, they never removed the rubbish and gave us the same towels from the cockroach‑infested room. A small fan would also be a big help in the heat. The complimentary drinking water tasted bad and the food was unremarkable. To make matters worse, I got diarrhea on the second day; my doctor later said it was likely salmonella, and the lunch that day featured chicken. I’ve heard other tourists report stomach issues too. The lodge really needs to raise its food safety and hygiene standards, because guests’ health should never be jeopardized. While some of these flaws might be tolerable at a ultra‑cheap lodge, paying 5‑star rates should guarantee basic cleanliness, maintenance, and hygiene.
