The host was incredibly friendly and helpful, offering loads of tips on hikes and buses, and pointing us toward street spots for dinner; the place she recommended, Cool Land Hot Hut, served the best food I’ve had in Sri Lanka. It’s in town, close to the bus station, shops, and other eateries, all within walking distance, and the shower hot water was fine. However, the room on the top floor had a very strong mold smell that hit my asthma hard, so I’d not recommend that room if you have respiratory problems. The value didn’t match the price; our stay in Kandy was cheaper and felt like a 6‑star experience, and our accommodation in Dambulla cost $7 a night for two, was comparable but more comfortable because it lacked the mold issue.
