The GH is just a 10‑minute walk from the Railway station and connects easily to the Metro. Inside, the house has character with timber floors, tatami rooms, and mezzanine single rooms; I stayed in a single facing the street, which was very basic but met my needs. The futon was comfy, the neighbourhood was quiet, and the GH stayed calm even when fully booked on a weekend—probably livelier in summer. Some guests used the reception/common area to write, and the owner was present most of the time. In summer it might be more actively used. The room had a bit of character with the mezzanine. Kyoto room rates rise in fall, and I booked late because of a change of mind, so it was relatively more expensive than other places I stayed at during my trip, with fewer services (no en‑suite wash/shower). Shared facilities were fine (2 showers, 2 WCs), but in summer they could get busy with full occupancy. Renting a microfibre towel seemed a little much considering the room rate.

The common area was great, the kitchen practical, and the staff excellent. The mattress was very lumpy.
