A charming bed‑and‑breakfast in Donkerbroek offers a cozy guest‑house atmosphere with free Wi‑Fi, a shared bathroom, and a well‑stocked minibar. Modern comforts include a bath, tea and coffee maker, hairdryer, electric kettle, and coffee machine. Situated 28 km from Groningen Eelde Airport, it provides easy access to National Park Drents‑Friese Wold, nearby ice‑skating rinks, and the Simplon music venue.

The people were friendly and the reception was warm, and the beds were fine. The main reason I don’t recommend this spot is the confusing pre‑arrival communication: I received at least 10–15 emails from senders 1) ‘booking’, 2) [email protected], and 3) finally from the landlords/ reception address, all of which were contradictory. When I called the only 06‑number I had, I was put on a line with rude intermediaries in Spain who told me I was calling outside business hours, even though I thought it was the direct Dutch B&B number. The reservation seemed to be routed through a Spanish intermediary, which isn’t clear if you book via booking. This matters because Spanish rules require you to provide a lot of data for a one‑night stay, like place of birth and a passport copy, and you only get a notice three days in advance. If you need to do this for a second person who isn’t your partner, lives further away, and you don’t have a passport copy, it becomes a hassle. It worked out in the end, but that’s why I didn’t cancel— we’re hikers with no other options. Other issues: shared bathroom (not a big problem but not ideal), basic but not great breakfast, a loft room with a single small window letting in light, limited space, and the slanted roof made it hard to sit upright on the bed, reducing comfort.

The TV in the room was a downside.

The room and beds were great, but it was a pity that the bathroom had to be shared; fortunately we were the only guests, so it didn’t bother us.

A cozy B&B, and the host couple were very friendly. Breakfast was great, and the bedroom was big enough for a B&B. There was no TV, but that was mentioned beforehand. The bathroom and toilet were shared with a total of three rooms, as stated in the description, and everything—bathroom, toilet, room, beds—was super clean on the first floor. Shoes stay downstairs :-) Plenty of parking on the premises, and our electric bikes could be locked with a lock and chain. In short: PRIMA. The host couple handled their bookings through Caluxio, whereas we booked via Trivago, so we received the paperwork from Caluxio. Communication with the host couple went through Caluxio directly, but also through other channels, which didn’t always run smoothly. During breakfast we mentioned this to the host couple, and they acknowledged it and said that Caluxio had hired someone to improve the communication. It takes a bit of attention, but everything worked out and THERE IS DEFINITELY NO REASON NOT TO BOOK.
