If minus 100 stars were an option, that would be my rating. My spouse and I stayed at Walter Hostel in Interlaken for three nights, and this was by far one of the most distressing accommodation experiences we have ever had. My biggest concern was the extremely disturbing hygiene situation. When we arrived, the person responsible for cleaning the room, bedding, pillows, floors, and bathroom appeared to have a severe and highly visible, active skin condition, including on both hands. He was repeatedly scratching the affected areas, and we observed what appeared to be discharge and large flakes or pieces of skin shedding. Most concerningly, he appeared to be handling and cleaning bedding and other guest-room items without protective gloves. Later, we noticed what appeared to be pieces or flakes of skin on the floor and bathroom floor. This made us extremely concerned about hygiene and possible exposure to something potentially contagious. To be clear, we do not know what medical condition this person had, nor are we claiming it was contagious. Our concern is not about the individual having a health condition. We respected him, did not confront or embarrass him, sympathize with his situation, and sincerely wish him a speedy recovery. Our criticism is directed at the management and the property's hygiene practices. An accommodation provider has a responsibility to ensure that rooms, bathrooms, bedding, towels, and floors are cleaned under safe and hygienic conditions. Appropriate protective and sanitation measures should be taken where there is a possibility of bodily fluids, skin debris, or other material contaminating guest areas. We spent all three nights feeling extremely uncomfortable, avoided using certain provided items, and worried about possible exposure. We are even considering seeking medical advice for reassurance. I am especially concerned about families with babies or young children who may crawl or play on these floors. Based on what my spouse and I personally witnessed, I cannot recommend this property. This was a serious hygiene and potential health-safety concern, not a minor comfort issue
