The Dragon Tree Guesthouse

A quiet, convenient location with a great view. The accommodation is clean, spacious and well decorated. The owner was so helpful during our stay and even before. He offered suggestions and advice on making the most of Kalk Bay and its attractions. We couldn’t have asked for better accommodation or a better time in Kalk Bay, spot on. Thank you very much for such an enjoyable stay.

Fantastic location and sea view. The apartments were beautifully furnished. The terrace had a small pool. Kalk Bay itself was charming, bohemian, and full of quirky shops. The apartments were freezing! We arrived around 17:00 to rooms that were very cold, measuring about 16 °C with a phone app. We wanted to stay in the apartment in the evening, cook, drink wine, and play cards, but it was impossible without keeping a jacket on. We reported the issue immediately, but it took a long time before any action was taken, and when we mentioned that the temperature didn’t rise, nothing was done. We were told it was winter in Cape Town and that no one else had complained about the cold. In the evening we still received no response. We were told the place had underfloor heating that should have worked. We wore wool underwear, yet it was a cold night. The next morning the temperature was 14 °C, so we decided to move on; this was not what we wanted. We found the host staff unhelpful when problems arose. The host who kept in touch did not live on site and had to forward our messages to the on‑site host, who was also absent, so we had to wait until she returned. We were also told that they had tried restarting the entire system when we reported that we were leaving. We were not offered a refund for a night due to the icy rooms, but were reminded that it was winter in Cape Town, that the host hadn’t frozen when she visited the apartment, and that no one else had felt cold before us.

We had to shift our booking to January because the place had been double‑booked, which was great, but I’ve heard nothing from the owner since our phone conversation before the trip. I can’t rate it because of that. I even went to the property to try and meet the owner while in Kalk Bay.
