Housekeeping needs to improve. The long‑life milk in the fridge had already expired, the fridge needed defrosting, there was a small red‑backed spider in the room, one shelf and chair had a sticky stain that hadn’t been cleaned, one of the wash lotion bottles was left empty on the hand basin, the carpet was very stained, and the table and two chairs outside the room looked like they hadn’t been cleaned for months.

The place sits right in the middle of Rutherglen, so you’re never far from anything. It’s not a fancy hotel, but it’s surprisingly cozy and has every basic need covered for a short trip.

The motel‑style rooms at the back of the Star Hotel were roomy and had enough gear for a simple breakfast. The bed was comfy and there was a free TV. I hit up Poachers Paradise across the street for a tasty meal because the Star Hotel and the Chinese spot were shut on Tuesday. The décor feels a little old‑school, and while the room was clean it could use a quick dusting; the carpet was stained and should be replaced. Still, for the price of other places in town it was good value despite a few minor flaws.
