The dorm was quieter and calmer than I expected, and the city was easy to reach with a bathhouse and convenience store nearby.

The place was clean, functional, and offered great value with lovely staff and a superb location, but it was hard to locate because no English name was displayed outside; see the picture.

The building, which is 100 years old, looks surprisingly clean, but be careful because some ceilings are low.

I used a translation app and found that “matatabi” means wood sage, a plant cats love, and the logo is a backpacking kitten; although I arrived a bit late, I went to Kamikochi and returned to Matsumoto in the evening, so check‑in worked out. Walking from matatabi to Matsumoto Station takes 25 minutes, but a bus is faster; the property sits in a residential area with a convenience store nearby and a great beer bar across the street. Friendly staff welcomed me, and I spent a comfortable night in the ancient miso brewery. The washer and dryer cost 500 yen. When I decide to leave the city’s noise and return to a more natural life, I’ll definitely come back to Matsumoto.
