I met new people and made new friends, but I realized that many people in remote Japan seem afraid of dark‑skinned people, and that made me quite anxious.

I got to eat with the other guests, which was nice, but the bath wasn’t quite up to par.

They gave me a lot of local tips, which I appreciated.

The staff were incredibly friendly and made me feel welcome, especially as a solo traveler who wanted evening conversation; they also offered solid suggestions for activities and dining. On the side, Kesennuma seems like the friendliest spot in Japan, with people chatting from the brewery to the izakaya, making it a lovely place.

I could mingle with staff and other guests, the facilities were clean, and the kitchen was free to use. However, the private room was in a separate building from the toilet, and at night I couldn’t sleep because of a thumping sound coming from inside the room.
