“The facilities were good but lack of privacy, ventilation and poor staff attitude were big negatives”
I arrived after a long, hot journey and a staff member pretended we had no reservation, which was a poor joke. The Balmoral Room was small but nicely furnished, clean, and well presented; the bed was comfortable and the shower space compact and functional. The continental breakfast was minimal: a tasteless croissant in a plastic wrapper left in the fridge with no butter, no knife, and only a standard toaster in the room—trying to toast a croissant is ridiculous. Coffee came from a sachet using the kettle. Bottled orange juice and spring water were decent, but we had to ask for more on the second night. No room service was available, so I had to go into the bar to request breakfast items for the next day before heading out. Ventilation was awful; we stayed in summer on a warm weekend, and the sun had been shining through the French windows all day with the curtains open, turning the small room into an oven. Only a very small bathroom window could open, and the upright fan merely circulated the hot air. We had hot, sleepless nights. The room opened onto the busy beer garden/dining area at the rear of the pub, so we couldn’t leave the door wide open for privacy and security reasons. A noisy refrigerant/coolant compressor—probably for the bar/kitchens—was housed in a small shed next to the room and ran almost constantly, making sleep nearly impossible; it would switch off occasionally but then back on just as you were falling asleep.
