“Besondere Entdeckung”
Staying at Lukas Kapeller in Steyr was a pleasant surprise; we landed there for our last night of vacation between Bratislava and Zurich. Check‑in was unusual: no staffed reception, just a clipboard with notes, my name, room number, and access code. My wife was initially uneasy about this impersonal style, while I eventually found the necessary information at the reception. The building was once the director’s office of Steyr‑Works and was renovated with great architectural sense. Today it houses family apartments, a small boutique hotel, and an excellent restaurant. Lukas Kapeller, born 1989, is a chef and host who belongs to Austria’s top culinary scene. His concept deliberately limits guests, offers personal service, and hosts only a few restaurant evenings. We experienced this on Sunday morning when he prepared breakfast for us. Instead of a buffet, there were many small, carefully arranged dishes: cheese, ham, trout, yogurt, fruit, vegetables, and eggs on request. Everything felt simple, high‑quality, and thoughtfully detailed, without being stiff or luxurious. The contrast was appealing: a nearly contact‑less check‑in at night, a highly personal breakfast by the top chef in the morning. This blend of architecture, family home, fine cuisine, and hospitality made the stay one of the highlights of our trip.
