We had an absolutely exceptional stay at The Porterhouse. The real highlight was the food, especially the côte de boeuf, which was one of the best steaks I’ve ever had—beautifully cooked, deeply flavourful, perfectly crusted on the outside and tender inside. The grill chef clearly knows their craft. Everything about the place felt thoughtful, warm, and high quality without being fussy. The rooms were lovely, the downstairs atmosphere relaxed and welcoming, and the food far surpassed what we expected from a hotel restaurant. After a month‑long trip around the UK, this meal still stood out. It was an outstanding final stop in Oxford and a place I would happily return to. The only downside was that our room was up two very steep, wonky, and narrow flights of stairs. That charm is typical of a building that age, but it can be tricky for suitcases. The staff actually helped us carry our luggage up the stairs because we arrived early and had to leave them (THANK YOU!), but getting them down again was a bit scary. I wouldn’t attempt it if I wasn’t reasonably young and able‑bodied.

The restaurant and rooms are great, the décor is nice, and the location is excellent compared to the city centre and train station. I read a review saying it would be hard to find, but that’s not the case: from the train station it’s very easy and quick to locate.
