The hosts and their helpfulness, plus the idyllic surroundings, were simply grand and unique. A frog was in the bathroom, and we had to remove a spider ourselves; the cleanliness with the animals wasn’t great, but we managed to solve it.

I was surrounded by jungle and a calm river, feeling more peaceful than ever. Getting there was a bit tricky, but the host organized everything nicely. Only two rooms meant just the two of us stayed. The host and his wife were amazing, always helpful, kind, and respectful. They cooked a fantastic Sri Lankan breakfast and the Kottu was a must‑try. Thanks for the peaceful stay, everything was great!

We started our Sri‑Lanka trip at this place, which gave us a wonderful intro to nature, local people, hospitality, and traditions. The house sits off the road, surrounded by tea hills, rice fields, and jungle sounds. Dumindu and Nethmi, a young couple, are modest, sweet, attentive, helpful, and always smiling, and they cook like gods—simple yet extremely tasty. Dumindu knows everything about local plants and Ayurveda, sharing village knowledge with us. The house has only two guest rooms, a lovely and very comfortable jungle house, so don’t expect a western‑style hotel; you feel like family. Practical notes: Ella Cottage is on the way to Ella Rock, so you can be the first at the rock for sunrise, and it’s just a 10‑minute walk on the railway track from Kithalella train station—easy to buy tickets and see the iconic train from the house three times a day. Buy third class for the full experience and stop for food and juices at River Face Restaurant Ella—delicious!
