The two upstairs rooms were pleasant and bright. The owner was watching and listening to us through cameras placed everywhere, sending messages to remind us we were being observed and commenting on everything we did; there were cameras aimed at the bedroom doors, so we felt like we were on Big Brother. We cut the stay short because the invasion of privacy was intolerable. The owner’s father, who lives in Switzerland, showed up unannounced and frightened my 75‑year‑old mother and my son, then talked to the owner via the cameras without even explaining why he was there.
