The place that is now thriving in Abashiri is about a 10‑minute walk from the station, which is convenient for train travel, but the inn itself is a bit old and could use some renovation.

Besides the convenient location for visiting the lake and the prison, I accidentally booked a smoking room, and according to the staff the hotel was sold out (I doubt that), so I couldn’t switch rooms; the room was unbearable, with a strong smoke odor that soaked into the carpet and curtains, making it impossible to sleep. Japanese people are so careful about not smoking in cities that it’s paradoxical that such toxic facilities exist.

The breakfast was tasty, but most importantly the water area was clean and reassuring; the shower hose has a grip so it doesn’t swing even with high water pressure. There were no particular issues.

The location is fantastic right in front of the station yet quiet. We used the restaurant (recommended) and the room was comfortable, but the breakfast could have more variety and it’s a bit far from the center if you walk.
