The dishes packed in seasonal vegetables were delicious. The fuki no tta, taraneme, and local‑vegetable tempura were the best. Though there was a lot of variety and quantity, everything was tasty and finished. The private bath was superb. It was a bit cold, but that was also great. It’s perfect for solo travelers 😃 The inn is ideal during autumn foliage, winter snow, and spring green. The building is a bit old and smells slightly stale, but the food and bath cover it. If staffing issues were resolved, it would become a beloved ryokan. 7.0/10

Everyone was very friendly and helpful from arrival to departure. They even arranged a doctor appointment when my wife felt unwell and did everything they could to ease her illness. The daily menus varied, which was a delightful surprise after seeing the reviews. Highly recommend. 10.0/10

The property looked stunning along a snowy riverside and had a very traditional vibe; rooms were spotless and cozy, and the staff were exceptionally kind and helpful. The private onsen was wonderful— you get a 40‑minute session each day, and if extra slots are free after dinner you can ask for a second visit. We dined both breakfast and dinner at the inn, which was absolutely amazing, and they accommodated our pescatarian diet; the dinner was adventurous for us Americans and a lot of fun. We chose this place for a truly traditional Japanese experience and it delivered. On the downside, the inn is a bit off the beaten path and the town of Obuse feels sleepy; when we visited in February most shops were closed on a Saturday. A ski resort is 20 minutes away, which we would have liked to explore. If you’re staying more than one night, getting a car is advisable; a taxi from Obuse station to the inn costs about ¥5000.

The location is easy to reach with a daily shuttle bus from the ryokan or by car, but be cautious in winter when it gets dark quickly and roads may have snow. The staff were great at handling my vegetarian meal request, and it turned out better than the meat option.
