The menu and food were great, the staff were friendly and helpful, and the location is excellent. However, the garbage bin near the outdoor stage had an unpleasant odor, the water bottles in the vending machine were pricey, and there were no perks for guests—no reserved beach chairs or discounted beach rentals.

Ballards sits just a short walk from the island ferry and on a stunning beach, offering onsite dining and several bars both on the beach and inside the restaurant. It’s a full‑service beach resort with rooms that are larger than typical for this type of property and very clean. The beach itself is kept free of seaweed and debris, and I liked the fancy step‑on activated foot washes. Sunset dinner specials are a great value, and Ballards provides luggage storage if you want to stay on the island longer than checkout. The downside is that there are only six guest rooms, so booking can be tough. Only three of those rooms have balconies with great views; the other three face the hill behind the hotel. There’s no cable TV, just Roku and app streaming. I couldn’t send or receive email from my computer or set up VPN over the Wi‑Fi, but I could use my phone as a hotspot. (When leaving, remember to cancel streaming services like Netflix.) Parking is very limited, which some guests complained about. In town, a few places only accept cash or maybe Venmo.

The location was fine, but the room’s view looked straight at a dumpster that’s always busy with people coming to dump trash.

The staff were very friendly and eager to help, and the place is just a few hundred yards from the ferry terminal. We would have liked a discounted rate for renting beach lounge chairs as resort guests. We asked about a couple of hours in the afternoon, but were told we’d have to pay for a full day, which we did. It seems the beach chair/umbrella concession operates independently of the resort, so it would be nice if an agreement could be made to accommodate resort guests.
