The breakfast could have been tightened up; many guests compare it to other hotels, and Matarengi Lodge falls short. The selection was at best thin and the eggs were overcooked. We actually had high expectations for this place. This weekend was festive in the city, yet no restaurant at the hotel was open, which is shameful, and the other dining options were poor. We went to Kaamos Lodge and Avasaksa for a good dinner, but why can’t the hotel and Övertorneå match that obvious service on a lovely summer evening?
The spa area was closed, which was a major let‑down since that was why we booked the hotel. They blamed technical issues, but the pool and sauna shouldn’t have been out of order together. They probably shut them down because it wasn’t high season and because they had a rag‑tag gathering that weekend.
“Nice but not really fully open. No Spa. No bar. Closed.”
The location was great for an arctic swim and the Torne Valley. The hotel was nice and clean. The spa was closed, and there were many visitors for the arctic circle swim. The staff were minimal, only open for breakfast. Everyone wanted to use the spa and bar after the swim and to watch football, but there was no staff. The bar was closed, the spa was closed. If you’re hosting guests for an event, keep the facilities open. Half‑day breakfast then closure was not great. People wanted to party together, but it wasn’t a full‑on party. These were open‑water swimmers; we had nowhere to go.
“Yhden yön pysähdys”
The location was good, with a shop nearby if needed. The room was tidy and the bed comfortable, and the breakfast had everything required. The price of the room should have included the spa section, which was closed, as were other hotel services. In my view, that should have been reflected in the room rate. Practically, the hotel was shut down except for breakfast, even though there was a big event in town that weekend. The room was hot, with no mechanical cooling. The shower had exactly one detergent; usually, hotels of this price range offer separate shampoo and body wash. The shower pressure was very moderate.
The beds were very comfortable with nice textiles, and the rooms were stylishly clean in a pleasant colour. The staff were super friendly. The only downside was having to leave the place.
