“Large clean and tidy room in a quiet hotel!”
The hotel sits in a calm spot and the rooms are roomy, spotless, and tidy, yet the illumination in the room was inadequate.

Hotel Joffre, located in Toamasina's heart, is 1 km from the harbour. The hotel features a restaurant, outside terrace, and souvenir shop. Rooms combine wooden furniture with natural fabrics and African-inspired paintings, equipped with air conditioning and satellite TV. Local and French cuisine is served, with a 24-hour front desk, meeting facilities, and laundry services available. Betainomby Airport is 13.6 km away.

I stayed at a quiet hotel where the rooms were large, clean, and spacious, but the lighting inside was poor.

The staff were friendly and accommodating.

The hotel offers good value for money, is very clean, and is conveniently located near Avenue de l'Indépendance. However, the subscription service was missing, the room price and number were wrong, the Wi‑Fi code was forgotten, and the dining area was deserted. Still, the staff were very cheerful and the owner did everything she could to make up for the mishaps.

Hotel Joffre sits on Boulevard Joffre in the heart of Toamasina, on a safe street where most of the best bars, restaurants, banks, small supermarkets, barbers, and fashion shops are within walking distance. The main harbour of Madagascar is about 1 km away, as are the two central markets of Madagascar and the Miami Beach complex. The hotel is well‑run, the staff are friendly, and they give useful local recommendations. The exterior and interior are styled like a retro‑boutique or African‑boutique, decorated with local art‑souvenirs. Rooms and bathrooms are large, with a wooden style, a balcony, air conditioning, a fan, a safety box, and a TV that shows French and English news channels. Internet is not perfect but generally works well, and laundry can be arranged. The Joffre Hotel suffered severe damage to the ground floor and roof from the cyclone in early 2026, but it is being renovated quietly and the damage does not affect the overall impression of the hotel. A small key‑holder with a lemur picture was handed to me at check‑in, which was a very nice touch. The hotel has no elevator, though staff can help with luggage if available. The water in the bathroom was sometimes only cold, and a couple of times there were one‑hour power outages. The hotel restaurant appeared closed temporarily. Payment for the room is cash only, which is inconvenient. The worst thing for me was the lighting in the room – it was very poorly lit, especially the bedside desks, making it hard to read at night – something that could be improved easily.
