The location was spot on, just a short walk to attractions like Ishidan Gai aka Stone Stairs and the Kajika Bridge. We booked two rooms: ours was a double and my daughter and son‑in‑law stayed in a regular room on the upper floor with a gorgeous alpine view. The larger room featured a huge attached open‑air onsen, while the other room had a smaller round enclosed onsen. The staff were friendly, greeted us when we drove up, and even parked our car for us. Breakfast and dinner were excellent, and we were given the chopsticks we chose at the start of our trip to keep as a souvenir—a very nice gesture. On arrival we were directed to the lobby to check in, which is typical for a ryokan. The lobby sofa looked a bit dated and could use an update. When I handed the check‑in staff a paper list of my daughter’s food allergens in Japanese, he only addressed the “peanut” and nothing else, giving off an unwilling attitude that felt odd for Japan’s hospitality. Most meals were fine except one tofu dish that caused a severe reaction for my daughter, something she hadn’t had before. I asked the server, who insisted it was just tofu, but the appearance suggested it was mixed with something and reshaped. The server didn’t investigate and seemed uninformed about ingredients. Throughout my travels in Japan, even a soba shop goes out of its way to handle allergens. This was the only disappointing part of our stay, and I hope they take it more seriously in the future because allergens like peanut can be life‑threatening.

When we checked in, the hotel gave us tea while they explained the facilities, showing very thoughtful hospitality. Breakfast and dinner were kaiseki, exquisitely prepared and delicious. The yukata came in various patterns to choose from, letting us pick our favorite. The hot‑spring area had both a regular bath and an outdoor bath on a higher floor. Inside the hotel there was a mailbox for sending postcards and a desk where you could buy stamps—very considerate. The hotel sits right across from the Ikaho Onsen bus stop, making it super convenient.

The room was spacious, decorated with flower paintings, and there were cute chrysanthemum arrangements everywhere, which I loved. The open‑air bath on the top floor had pleasant water and a wonderful view. Small touches in the public bath, like a tiny seat in the elevator and water beside the bath, showed careful thought. The staff were kind.

Everything was great: food, staff, onsen, room.
