Dharamshala

Tibetan exile governance meets Dhauladhar mountain trails.

introduction

Overview

Dharamshala splits into two distinct elevation zones separated by a steep ten-kilometer road. Lower Dharamshala functions as a busy administrative hub, while upper Dharamshala—centered on McLeod Ganj—houses the Tibetan government-in-exile. You navigate between sections using shared taxis, local buses, or steep walking trails. Heavy monsoon rains hit between July and September, frequently causing road blockages.

Arrival by air

Kangra Airport sits 13 km south of the town. Taxis charge fixed rates at the official counter inside the terminal.

Seat of Tibetan exile

The 14th Dalai Lama established his residence here in 1960. It serves as the headquarters of the Central Tibetan Administration.

Bypass ridge traffic

Upper Dharamshala road links clog during peak hours. Park in Lower Dharamshala and take the Skyway ropeway up to McLeod Ganj.

food

Tibetan momos, Kangri dham, and hilltop cafes

Tibetan migration shaped the dining landscape across upper Dharamshala. Himachali regional cooking dominates Lower Dharamshala markets. You find authentic Tibetan steamed dumplings alongside traditional Himachali festive meals served on leaf plates made from local Taur or Sal leaves.

The town transformed permanently in 1960 when India offered refuge to the 14th Dalai Lama following his flight from Tibet.
