El Nido

Limestone karst towers over dark bays and boat docks.

introduction

Overview

El Nido occupies the northern tip of Palawan island, where black limestone cliffs drop straight into Bacuit Bay. Most daily activity centres on outrigger boats taking visitors through four standardized island routes. Town proper is dense and loud, while surrounding bays offer quieter shorelines. You come here for marine lagoons, sheer topography, and clear water.

Direct flight shortcut

Lio Airport (ENI) sits 20 minutes from town. Direct AirSWIFT flights save a six-hour van ride from Puerto Princesa.

Protected bay rules

Bacuit Bay forms part of an expansive managed resource reserve. Single-use plastic bottles are strictly prohibited on boat tours.

Lagoon access cap

The local government limits daily visitor numbers to the Big and Small Lagoons. Book your boat permit days in advance.

food

Fresh Kinilaw and seaside grills

Dining in El Nido relies on sea conditions and fresh catches brought into the local market each morning. Kinilaw is the staple raw dish, using fresh red snapper or tuna flash-cured in native coconut vinegar, calamansi juice, ginger, and chili. It offers a sharper acid bite than Latin American ceviche without cooked textures.Evening dining centers on open-air beach grills in town and along Corong Corong. You pick whole squid, grouper, or stuffed bangus (milkfish) directly from ice trays, cooked over coconut charcoal and served alongside garlic rice and soy-chili dips.

  • Seafood timing

Arrive at beach grills by 18:30. Popular catches like red snapper sell out within two hours of sunset.

  • Tour lunch spreads

Standard day-boat itineraries include a beach buffet of grilled fish, pork belly, crabs, and sliced mango.

history

A short history

For centuries, the area was known primarily to the Tagbanwa people and Chinese traders. Chinese merchants braved the jagged limestone cliffs to harvest swiftlet nests made of hardened saliva. These high-value edible nests gave the municipality its Spanish name, El Nido, meaning the nest. The region remained an isolated fishing outpost until 1983 when a marine turtle sanctuary was established in Bacuit Bay. Diving operators arrived shortly after. In 1998, the government designated the entire northern tip of Palawan as a managed resource protected area to limit rapid environmental decline.

A 54,000-hectare marine sanctuary is established after a dive resort opens on Miniloc Island.

  3. 1998

    Protected status expansion

The government classifies El Nido as a Managed Resource Protected Area covering ecosystems from forest to reef.

    Lagoon visitor caps

Authorities introduce strict daily caps and ban motorized boats inside the main lagoons to stop coral damage.

Where to stay

Select your base using boat dock access versus noise tolerance. Town Proper puts you steps from island departures and cheap food, but traffic noise lasts late. Corong Corong trades dock proximity for sunset views and quieter boutique hotels. Exclusive private island resorts sit inside Bacuit Bay itself, bypassing municipal boat traffic entirely.

transport

Getting around

El Nido has no train network or standard full-size city buses. Local transport on land relies almost entirely on motorized tricycles—three-wheeled motorbikes with passenger sidecars. The main town core is small enough to walk in fifteen minutes, but trips to surrounding beaches require hired transit.

  • Standard short trips between Town Proper and Corong Corong carry fixed local rates around ₱100 per ride.

  • Tricycle drivers double rates after 22:00 for trips outside town proper to Las Cabañas or Lio.

  • Scooters cost roughly ₱500 per day. Inspect brakes and tires carefully; roads north to Nacpan are unpaved in sections.

  • Reserve your return van to Puerto Princesa at least 24 hours ahead during dry season.

Standard seat-in-coach boat rate per person, including lunch spread.

  • Eco-Tourism Fee: ₱200

Two-person kayak rental fee required to enter the shallow lagoon entrance.

practicalities

Good to know

  • ATM reliability

Town ATMs run out of cash on long weekends. Withdraw cash before flying or stopping in Puerto Princesa.

  • Water safety

Tap water is unpotable. Drink filtered or bottled water only, including for brushing teeth.

  • Reef-safe sunscreen

Local regulations ban chemical sunscreens containing oxybenzone to protect coral reefs.

  • Power stability

Grid blackouts happen routinely. Mid-range and upper-tier hotels use back-up generators.

  • Dry bag essential

You must wade through chest-deep water to board outrigger boats. Pack electronics in dry bags.
