A short history
The Syilx Okanagan Nation lived along these waters for thousands of years before European arrival. Oblate missionaries established the region's first permanent settlement in 1859, planting fruit trees that laid the foundation for the valley's agricultural economy. Rail connections later transformed Kelowna into an orchard trade center, which shifted towards wine production and tourism in the late twentieth century.
