A short history
In 1871, diamonds were discovered on the farm Vooruitzigt, sparking the world's largest diamond rush. Thousands of miners flooded the dry plateau, manually excavating the volcanic pipe that became the Big Hole. Cecil Rhodes consolidated these claims into De Beers Consolidated Mines in 1888, establishing a global monopoly that funded regional rail expansion and shaped 20th-century South African industrial policy.
