Lowestoft

Britain's easternmost town, built on fishing and broads.

introduction

Overview

Lowestoft sits on the Suffolk coast at the easternmost point of Great Britain. Lake Lothing cuts through the town centre, dividing the working port and North Denes from South Beach and Oulton Broad. Navigation relies on crossing either the historic bascule bridge or the Gull Wing bridge. You can move between coastal beaches and inland broads within a ten-minute drive.

Arrival trick

Take the Wherry Line train from Norwich for direct access to the central station. Arriving by car requires planning around Lake Lothing bridge lifts.

Geographic marker

Ness Point marks the UK's most easterly landfall. A giant concrete compass marker called the Euroscope marks distances to European cities.

Timing strategy

Visit Oulton Broad on Thursday evenings in summer to watch powerboat racing. Book broadside tables weeks ahead for these race nights.

practicalities

Good to know

  • Blue Flag beach rules

South Beach holds Blue Flag status; check seasonal dog ban zones between May and September.

  • High Street shop closures

Many independent shops along the historic High Street close early on Wednesday afternoons.

  • Tidal currents at South Pier

Strong currents near harbour entrances make swimming outside marked beach flags dangerous.

  • Free parkland entry

Nicholas Everitt Park and Sparrow's Nest gardens are free to enter during daylight hours.
