Nungwi sits at the northernmost point of Unguja island. Unlike the east coast of Zanzibar, the ocean here stays swimmable at low tide. Beachfront resorts line the western shore, while a working fishing village operates just behind the sand. You can walk the entire shoreline at low tide to reach neighboring Kendwa.

Nungwi developed as a secluded seafaring community at the top of Unguja. Isolated by rough inland tracks, villagers built dhows from local timbers for generations. Tourism arrived in the 1990s, converting the western fishing shores into an internationally recognized resort area.

Getting around
Nungwi is compact enough to navigate on foot along the beach or via dirt lanes. For longer trips to Kendwa or Stone Town, local taxis or shared minibuses are the standard choices.
You can walk to Kendwa along the sand at low tide. Check tide tables so you do not get cut off by rocky points.
Route 116 trucks leave Stone Town when full. Expect tight wooden seating and frequent stops along the main road.
Village paths are dark after sunset. Hire a local taxi for movements between the village center and outer resorts.
Boatmen operate informal transfers between Nungwi and Kendwa beaches. Negotiate the price before boarding.

Cover shoulders and knees when walking inside Nungwi village. Swimwear is acceptable on the beach strip only.
