Oklahoma City

Oil money, Indigenous heritage, and serious beef.

introduction

Overview

Oklahoma City spreads outward across flat prairie, connected by wide highways and a central streetcar loop. You need a car or rideshare account for distant sights, but Downtown, Midtown, and Bricktown are walkable on foot. The city balances serious historical memory with major investments in public parks and cultural centers. Expect friendly interactions, large portions, and summer heat that drives activity indoors.

Arrival shortcut

Will Rogers World Airport sits 10 miles southwest of downtown. Rideshares pick up directly outside baggage claim without terminal shuttles.

Creative District distinction

The First Americans Museum represents all 39 federally recognized tribal nations headquartered in Oklahoma today.

Streetcar navigation

The OKC Streetcar runs two loops through downtown and Midtown. A day pass costs $3 and uses the Token Transit app.

food

Fried onion burgers, prime ribeye, and Vietnamese pho

Oklahoma food history centers on two staples: beef and the fried onion burger. The onion burger originated during the Great Depression in El Reno, pressing thin-shaved onions directly into beef patties to stretch meat budgets. In the city proper, Tucker's Onion Burgers serves this regional style daily. For prime cuts, Cattlemen's Steakhouse in Stockyards City has served hand-cut steaks since 1910, famously bought in a dice game. A large Vietnamese diaspora along NW 23rd Street also makes Oklahoma City an exceptional spot for pho and banh mi.

  • Eat an onion burger at lunch

Tucker's presses sweet onions into local beef on a flat top grill. Order two single patties rather than one double for the best onion-to-meat sear.

  • Visit Cattlemen's early

Stockyards City retains its working cattle market heritage. Cattlemen's opens at 06:00 for breakfast steaks and calf fries.

  • Explore Little Saigon

NW 23rd Street hosts dozens of Vietnamese eateries. Pho Cuong serves deep broth simmered for hours, ideal for a fast, inexpensive lunch.

history

A short history

Oklahoma City was born in a single afternoon. On April 22, 1889, the Land Run opened unassigned Indigenous territory to homesteaders, growing the city population from zero to 10,000 by nightfall. Oil discovery in 1928 generated vast wealth, funding Art Deco downtown skyscrapers. On April 19, 1995, a domestic terrorist bomb destroyed the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building, killing 168 people. The tragedy reshaped civic identity, though downtown renewal was already underway through the original MAPS sales tax initiative passed by voters in December 1993.

  1. 1889

    The Oklahoma Land Run

An estimated 50,000 people sprinted across the border at noon to claim land plots, establishing Oklahoma City overnight.

  2. 1928

    Oil strikes in city limits

The Oklahoma City No. 1 well hit oil, turning backyard plots and even the capitol grounds into working oil fields.

  3. 1993

    First MAPS tax passed

Voters approved a temporary 1-cent sales tax to build a canal, arena, and park, launching decades of downtown transformation.

  4. 1995

    Murrah Building bombing

A truck bomb destroyed the federal building. The city responded with nationwide solidarity and created the National Memorial.

  5. 2021

    First Americans Museum opens

Decades in planning, the museum opened along the Oklahoma River to showcase the history of 39 tribal nations.
