Puerto Iguazú

The quiet gateway to South America's roaring waters

introduction

Overview

Puerto Iguazú is a low-rise border town built around national park logistics rather than urban flash. You move between downtown and the rainforest via Highway 12, relying on city buses, taxis, or foot. Expect tropical humidity, red mud paths, and an early-to-bed rhythm tied to park opening times.

Arrival transfer options

IGR airport lies 20 km east of downtown. Scheduled minibuses meet all domestic flights, or you can book an official airport taxi at the arrivals counter.

UNESCO site status

Iguazú National Park earned UNESCO World Heritage status in 1984 for its massive cataract system and pristine Atlantic forest habitat.

Park ticket strategy

Buy Argentine national park tickets online in advance to skip ticket counter queues. Bring your passport, as staff verify identity at the turnstiles.

food

River fish and border market bites

Dining in Puerto Iguazú centers around fresh freshwater catches from the Paraná and Iguazú rivers. Regional menus feature surubí and pacú, served grilled or baked in earthenware dishes with creamy cheese sauces. You will also find Paraguayan influence in cassava-based sides like chipá bread. For informal evening meals, head straight to the Feirinha market stalls. Vendors serve cold draft beer alongside boards of picanha steak, marinated olives, and local cheese blocks. It provides a grounded alternative to tourist steak houses in town.

  • Order pacú over beef

Try pacú at riverside restaurants. This oily freshwater fish has rich flavor that outshines standard border steak cuts.

  • Feirinha hours

Market stalls open around 18:00 and stay lively past midnight. Go after 20:00 for the fullest food choices.

  • Cash preferred at markets

Stall owners at the Feirinha accept Argentine pesos and Brazilian reais, but rare ones take credit cards.

history

A short history

Long before national borders were drawn, the region was inhabited by the indigenous Guaraní people, who named the cascading waters Iguazú, meaning big water. Spanish explorer Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca became the first European to record the falls in 1541.The modern settlement took shape in the early 20th century as timber extractions gave way to eco-tourism. The creation of national parks on both sides of the border turned a remote outpost into an international transit point.
