Rishīkesh

Yoga ashrams, river rapids, and evening prayer on the Ganga.

introduction

Overview

Rishīkesh sits along the Ganga, though the river enters the northern Indian plains at Haridwar, about 20 km downstream. The town runs on two parallel tracks: spiritual pilgrimages along the riverbank and adventure sports in the rapids north of town. Shared auto-rickshaws and footbridges connect the main zones on either side of the Ganga. Expect dry, meat-free menus throughout the municipality by strict local ordinance.

Arrival from Jolly Grant Airport

Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun sits 21 kilometres away. A pre-paid taxi at the terminal gate costs ₹1,000 to ₹1,200.

Meat and alcohol ban

Rishīkesh strictly prohibits alcohol and non-vegetarian food within city limits. Local eateries serve only vegetarian meals.

Crossing the Ganga

Shared boats cross the Ganga between banks near Ram Jhula for ₹10 per passenger when footbridges are crowded.

practicalities

Good to know

  • Monkey safety

Keep plastic bags, food, and spectacles out of sight when walking across Ram Jhula and nearby trails.

  • Ghat etiquette

Remove footwear before stepping onto stone bathing ghats or entering ashram grounds.

  • Cash requirements

ATMs frequently run out of cash in Swarg Ashram. Keep spare rupees for auto-rickshaws and street cafes.

  • Dress code

Cover shoulders and knees when attending evening Aarti or entering temple precincts.

  • River currents

The Ganga flow is deceptive and dangerous. Swim only at designated shallow ghats with grab ropes.
